Tombstone Tuesday - More From The Bean Cemetery

To date we have discussed three of the known burials in the Bean Family Cemetery, located nar Waiteville in Monroe County, West Virginia. They are: William Bean, his wife Rachel Wisman Bean, and their daughter Nancy Bean.

It is believed that William and Rachel's eldest child, Emily, is also buried in this cemetery, along with her spouse, Thomas J. LONG.

You will recall from our previous posts, that none of the orginal stones to the cemetery have any legible markings remaining, if, indeed, they ever did. So, with each post that I am doing on individuals believed to have been buried here, and the many stones that are here, the stone shown is only representative of the person, and not their exact tombstone.

Emily Bean was born in 1814 along Dropping Lick, near present day Zenith in Monroe County, West Virginia, near the base of Peter's Mountain, to William Bean and Rachel Wiseman, who had been married 20 November of the previous year.

Emily married Thomas J. LONG [1810-1888], also from Monroe County, on o Sep 1833 at the age of 19 years. Thomas was a farmer. And the couple went on to have eleven known children:
William B. [1834-1859...may have been buried here as well]
John Wesley    [1836-1864]
Jarrett Morgan    [1838-1926]
Mary    [1839-abt 1905]
Overton Bergis    [b. 1841]
Rachel    [1843-1924]
Archibald    [b. 1845]
Allen Madison    [1849-1935]
Thomas Washington    [1851-1938]
Elizabeth A.    [1853-1942]
Nancy Ann    [abt 1857 - 1938]

According family records, Emily died 15 Apr 1889 on Dropping Lick, and she and her husband Thomas were buried in the Bean Family Cemetery. There is not a report found in the Monroe County records regarding either her death, or that of Thomas. Her cause of death is unknown. She was about 75 years of age.

52 Weeks of Personal Genealogy & History - Week # 22 Secrets

Week 22. Secrets. Describe something about yourself that won’t be found on any record 100 years from now.

I really had to think about this one for a bit! My life has pretty much been an open book thusfar, so what is something that won't be found in 100 years about me?

About 18-months ago, I went from having a head full of rich, chestnut colored hair, to being totally gray. [Some individuals actually thought it was a dye job gone awry at first!]

Truth is, in 1997, at 38, I was diagnosed with oat-cell cancer in the lungs. While I did not lose all of my hair during treatment, it did turn totally gray almost overnight. And finally to what I have know, almost all white! And yes, I am in my early 50's now, and have pretty much aged into my hair, so that it suits me now. And I wear my gray and white hair as badge of honor. I survived cancer!

Please note... I never smoked in my life. But my Dad and my first husband were both very incosniderate smokers, and I was always bombarded with second-hand smoke. If you MUST smoke, please do so courteously!

But will anyone know in 100 years how early in life I went to this "geritol" hair?

I sincerely doubt it. That is unless I properly archive this weeks assignment!

Only time will tell!

[52 Weeks of Personal Genealogy & History by Amy Coffin is a series of weekly blogging prompts (one for each week of 2011) that invite genealogists and others to record memories and insights about their own lives for future descendants. You do not have to be a blogger to participate. If you do not have a genealogy blog, write down your memories on your computer, or simply record them on paper and keep them with your files.]

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun.. It's Find-A-Grave Time!

Another great assignment from Randy Seaver, over at GeneaMusings:

"Hey genea-searchers, it's SATURDAY NIGHT ... time for more GENEALOGY FUN!!!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to:

1) Go to the Find-a-Grave website (www.findagrave.com) and search for ancestors that you don't know the burial location of. How far back in time did you have to go to find this person? Hint #1 - use your ancestor list to help you. Hint #2 - don't forget to use the last surname for females!

2) If you think that Find-a-Grave will not have your persons of interest, then check another burial index that might help you.

3) Tell us about your search - who did you look for, and who was the first ancestor that you found that you did not have a burial location for previously? Write your own blog post, or make a comment on this post.

Another excellent assignment from Randy! And I really loved this one!

I have long searched for the burial site of my great-great-grandparents, Etiene Banet and his wife Francoise Bidaine Banet. This couple were born and raised in France, and moved to this country when they were middle-aged. It had long been assumed that they were buried at St. Mary of the Knobs located in Floyds Knobs, Floyd County, Indiana. But we never knew for sure.

I found them both immediately, and while there were no pictures of the tombstones, there was a transcription for each of their stones. And they are inscribed in French!

Etienne [Stephen] Banet was born 17 Jan 1795 in Doubs, France. His stone reads:
"Banet Ici repose le corps de Jetienne BANET nee a Arcey cantons de Lisle dt du Douhs, FRANCE ne le 17 Ferrier 1795 decede le 18 Apr 1871 dpouse de Francois BIDAINE agede 76 ans"
Find A Grave Memorial# 59370171

Francoise Bidaine Banet was born 18 Apr 1802, also in Doubs, France. Her tombstone inscription reads as below:
"Bidaine Ici repose corpse de Francois BIDAINE ne a Arcey Canton de Sisle dt. Du Doubs, FRANCE ne le 18 Avril 1802 decede 16 Mars 1877 epouse d. Etionne BANET aged de 75"
Find A Grave Memorial# 59370219

And, just as suspected, the couple were layed to rest at St. Mary of the Knobs Church, Floyds Knobs, Floyd County, Indiana.

St. Mary of the Knobs

Etienne and Francoise were married 01 Oct 1821 in Doubs, France.

They had 12 known children:

Joseph Alexandre    [1830-1886]
Josephine    [1830-1914]   ***Note: Joseph Alexandre and Josephine were twins]
Isadore    [1832-1901]   ****Isadore was my great-great-grandfather.
Ferre'ol    [1835-1836]  ***Ferre'ol was the last child born before sailing from France. He died at   Floyds Knobs.
Aime Appollinare    [1837-1884]

Family Recipe Friday - Mama's Washday Supper

I don't have a picture of this dish, as it's been quite some time since I last made it! But this is one meal that Maamade alot of when I was growing up. And she served it often to my children as well! It was a fast and easy meal to put together on a da when she was in a hurry to get other things done, besides standing over a stove cooking!

Mama's Washday Supper

Ingredients:
1 [16-oz] box of elbow macaroni pasta
1 large jar of spaghetti sauce
1 [12-oz] package of hotdogs, cooked and then cut into round pieces about 1/4-inch each

Directions:

Cook macaroni according to package directions.
Cook hotdogs according to package directions, and then slice into 1/4-inch round rings.
Mix macaroni, hotdogs and spaghetti sauce together.

You may serve this as is, or top with grated Parmesan cheese.

This was a real staple in our house! And Mama sometimes used homemade canned stewed tomatoes instead opf spaghetti sauce! Delicious! And the kiddies loved it!
It can also be served with garlic bread or toast.

Funeral Card Friday...Memorial Book for Henry C. Dreher Jr.

This shows the front cover of the Memorial Book given to his wife, Irene Banet Dreher, upon the funeral of Henry Condar Dreher Jr.

There is some controversy on Henry's middle name. It is recorded on all legal documents as "Conra". But Grandpa told me on numerous occasios that this was, in fact,an error. That his middle name as "Condar".

He stated that "Conrad" was a Russian Communist name, and his parents never named him Conrad, but instead chose "Condar" for his middle name.

Henry was born 31 December 1902 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. He died 17 May 1977 in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana.

He was the greatest man I've ever known, and I miss him terribly.
