He died on July 5th, 2018, leaving behind 8 packets of Szechuan sauce, a whole lot of debt, one 10 euro note, and other various things that could very possibly be used to make concentrated dark matter, the fuel for accelerated space travel- regardless of the issue with relativity.
He was preceded in the death by approximately 101 billion other people and his brother Brian James Sweetack. He was survived by his brother James Sweetack (Appleton), sister Bree Sweetack (A-town), and brother Andrew Sweetack (Green Bay Correctional). He enjoyed many things, such as getting “shwifty”, Drunk History, dark humor memes, his cat Bear, fast cars, and most of all his sister and his friends, each and every one of them.
He donated to many causes, most importantly the Mount Rose American Teen Princess Pageant. He always rooted for the ‘most smartest’, and ‘the best god damn tapper’. He cared for humanity, always putting the needs of others above himself. He was the protector of every one he loved.
Mike died knowing that global acts of terrorism happen every day, the known universe is made up of 50,000,000,000 galaxies, and cats always land on their feet thanks to physics.
In leu of flowers, please feel free to set up your own memorial fund to learn something new or teach others. Or go to your local tavern and order a drink for two.. and say ‘uze want some shots? I’m buying..’
Mike, we love you and miss you more than any written words can express. We know you would say that ‘love is just a chemical reaction that compels animals to breed’… but we don’t care, we miss you with every atom of our beings.
Live long and prosper, even Pickle Rick.</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGy1acIqh5Y_YAf8JM8_OxzANdHygw-iuyGq3ANGGC1hxt_SZix1te6OZ1ThjoeVYRDwMHP5mwAl7mAlObD-mZHvPV_jqlNup95t0-7foBaNhQjZe0Z2c7K4GgYrXQTSZUGN4ZAi_Q8qqj/s1600/spine+x-ray.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="627" data-original-width="940" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGy1acIqh5Y_YAf8JM8_OxzANdHygw-iuyGq3ANGGC1hxt_SZix1te6OZ1ThjoeVYRDwMHP5mwAl7mAlObD-mZHvPV_jqlNup95t0-7foBaNhQjZe0Z2c7K4GgYrXQTSZUGN4ZAi_Q8qqj/s400/spine+x-ray.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It wasn't until recent x-rays done on my spine that I really began to wonder how much of my problem was hereditary. (Oh by the way, my x-rays just showed age related degeneration, no bulging disks or herniated disks, or any other anomaly. The pain really can't be explained, except that I am overweight and stressing muscles.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My mother had a bad back, and had several surgeries to correct her problems and they helped minimally over the years. After her retirement, her back didn't bother her any longer. She was chair bound most of the time before she passed away, so there was no pressure on her spine. And I am sure that helped.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I considered her father, my grandfather, who also had a bad back, and would not have surgery, although physicians told him they could ease his pain if he would agree to surgery. He was a naturalist and preferred to do things his way. He wore a back brace and swore he got relief with it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lately, I have been pretty much chair bound, unable to sit or stand for long. So x-rays were done. I've been put on anti-spasmodic for my back muscles, and they may do a little bit of help, but not a lot. So, I decided to go on a diet. I am very overweight. I'm only just beginning, but I am down 16 pounds so far. And I am doing yoga for core and back strengthening. Now THAT has really helped!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIeGdq6Nyn0V3JMvVL3EissF_8EXpO3UciI7eaa_z6U_Vop0TzLTi9dzuGK3WYauQ4dOPHLVbooCzp8og39a9gMGXNWAnUCvA1JdCoG-I87-E7YNbmTvw8IURLPPvRWdk3PwiAI_o_nqpv/s1600/yoga.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="627" data-original-width="940" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIeGdq6Nyn0V3JMvVL3EissF_8EXpO3UciI7eaa_z6U_Vop0TzLTi9dzuGK3WYauQ4dOPHLVbooCzp8og39a9gMGXNWAnUCvA1JdCoG-I87-E7YNbmTvw8IURLPPvRWdk3PwiAI_o_nqpv/s400/yoga.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
In my case, I just know that two generations before me also had back problems. We were all heavy, tall, and had uncontrolled pain. But it dawned on me, after beginning this weight loss journey and yoga that knowing the medical history of our ancestors could explain a lot of our health problems. So I am determined to find out more about the health issues of my ancestors whenever possible. You just never know when it might help to know!</div>

If you are like me, I have been totally enthralled with The Lost Colony since I was a child growing up just a short distance away in Norfolk, Virginia. The Lost Colony and Jamestown were two places I "cut my teeth on"!<br />
<br />
What follows is a very interesting report. It is a bit lengthy, but well worth the read. I highly recommend it if you hold any interest. It not only covers past endeavors to discover what happened, but current results, including DNA. Well worth the read!<br />

The Lost Colony of Roanoke – what an enduring mystery – for 431 years it has remained unsolved and fascinated Americans and the British, alike.</div>

William Bean House</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
William Bean was born September 18, 1792. It is believed he was born in Baltimore, Maryland. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
By the time the Civil War rolled around, he was getting up in years. He was part of the "Home Guard", a group of the elderly and very young (too young for fighting in the War) that helped to protect and keep the peace in the mountains where they lived.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Because they lived in a little community called Waiteville, they were nearly isolated from West Virginia, although a part of that state. Waiteville today is still isolated from the rest of West Virginia. If you look at the southeastern portion of the state, in Monroe County, you will see a little dogleg shaped area and it is here that Waiteville sits. To the east, west and south sit Virginia. To the north is Peter's Mountain that separates the tiny community from the rest of West Virginia. During the war torn era, it must have been terrible for those left to survive without their men to protect them! They couldn't rely upon the state, and were at a disadvantage with the Confederacy at their doorstep. And yet, the Union armies marched right through as well. The community itself was torn between allegiances. Families were split on their ideas. William Bean's was no exception.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
They were also often called upon to supply both armies with food and livestock. There are many tales I could tell about the terrors from that. But they were also plagued with renegade deserters. Those from the North trying to get back North, and those from the South trying to get back to the South.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
On this particular occasion, a troop of soldiers were spotted heading toward the community. Someone came riding to Bean's place and told him to hide his goods to prevent the troops from taking them. As a precaution, cattle and hogs had been taken into pastures and pens up in the mountains in the woods. Food stuff was hidden, except for enough to get by for a few days at a time, just for such times as this. Usually buried in a pit in the woods and disguised.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Well, old Bean had recently converted his funds from paper into gold and had not hid this as yet. Not having time to go himself, he sent his daughter to go and hide it. The story is he told her exactly where to hide it. But then, later, both "forgot" where it was hidden. (How two of you could forget it makes the whole thing sound suspicious, but so the tale goes.) Later, when they went to get it, they couldn't find it. (I have my theories, but won't discuss that here at this time. We'll save that for another day.)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For years and years there were family members who dug holes throughout the property looking for the gold. And one day, I believe it was either in the late 1940's or early 1950's, someone decided to check out the boggy area. Not really a swamp, but "mushy" ground. And they decided to use a metal detector.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
They searched for days and days. And just when they were about to give up, there was detection! It was deep. And so they began to dig. And they dug. After awhile, the individual got tired and enlisted help. Eventually, after two days of digging they struck something iron. Excited they dug until they uncovered the object. Fully expecting an iron chest filled with gold bars, you can only imagine their disappointment when the object finally pulled from the bog was a rusted out wood burning cook stove! And no, there was no gold hidden inside.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div>
To this day no one knows exactly what happened to the gold. And Bean was a very wealthy man! But there are rumors and speculations. But wouldn't it have been a hoot to have been there when they dug up that big old cast iron stove? All that work for some rusty iron.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Irene Banet Dreher</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
After Grandpa passed away in 1977, Granny was alone. So in 1978, my Mother, her daughter, moved her to West Virginia, to live in a trailer behind her house.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Granny was very happy living in her little home. She had plenty of room for just one person. And she was in the country. Someplace she enjoyed being. She would go out into the garden in the summer months and gather whatever she wanted from our garden. And during the winter months she would make quilts and crochet.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
In 1985 my Mom and Dad sold their home to me, and they moved next door, and Granny remained behind my house. Shortly before I bought the property, Granny, who was known to have a temper now and then, evidently felt left out one day. We had all gathered at my house, not planning to, it just ended up that way. It was summer, and the kids were all outside playing. Mom and Dad were at my house, as was my sister and her family. We were all laughing and just enjoying each other's company.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We were all in the kitchen. I had a huge country kitchen that was over 30-feet long. On each end of the kitchen was a back door that led out to each side of the house. Well, Granny came storming in on one side. She attempted to slam the storm door, but the hydraulic closure kept it from slamming. She looked at all of us gathered around my big old farm table and began stomping like a little child and stomped across the kitchen, without ever saying a word, and out the other door. She attempted to slam that door as she went out as well. Well, the hydraulic closure on that particular door wasn't as tight as the other...so when she slammed it, it slammed all the way against the door facing, but then popped back open. And when it did, the door popped Granny on her backside!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Granny whirled around and gave us all a dirty look. "Mom is everything all right?", my Mother asked her.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
"Hmph!" was her reply. And she continued on her way and went back to her trailer. Mom told us to just leave her be and she would check and see what was wrong later.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Well, as I said, Granny had thought we were having some kind of gathering and hadn't invited her. And so she was miffed. She didn't realize, until Mom explained to her, that we'd just all accidentally ended up visiting at the same time.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Still, it's been a long time running memory of the day Granny got kicked in the behind by the slamming door! She wasn't hurt at all. But if you could have seen her face when she thought one of us had done it, it was simply priceless!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Granny was born in 1906 in Indiana. She died in 1989 in Monroe County, WV. Mom made good on her promise to take her body back to Indiana and she is buried beside of Grandpa.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Do you have a funny story about someone losing their temper? </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

Anyone who wishes to restore or repair old photographs has a new tool available for use. As long as it is a Daguerreotype, experts at the Canadian Light Source, a high-energy X-ray facility in Saskatchewan, have discovered how to restore important details from daguerreotypes that have been written off as beyond recovery.</div>

The results are impressive. Madalena Kozachuk, a doctorate student in chemistry at the University of Western Ontario in London, was able to use X-ray beams to map out the distribution of copper, silver, gold and iron on the two plates. She then wanted to see whether she could detect mercury on the plates, but a beam with sufficient energy was not then available at the Saskatchewan facility. To complete her investigation, Ms. Kozachuk travelled to another synchrotron at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. It was there that the glowing atoms of mercury revealed the images on the plates in exquisite detail, astounding the researchers.</div>

Previous research showed that the Iceman lived during the Copper Age, between 3370-3100 BC, and was probably killed by an arrow. In this study, the researchers analyzed the Iceman’s chert tools to learn more about his life and the events that led to his tragic death.</div>

The team used high-power microscopes and computed tomography to examine the chert tools in microscopic detail, including a dagger, borer, flake, antler retoucher, and arrowheads.</div>

The structure of the tools’ chert reveals that the stone was collected from several different outcrops in what is now the Trentino region (Italy), about 70km away from where the Iceman was thought to live. Comparing this ancient toolkit with other Copper Age artefacts revealed stylistic influences from distant alpine cultures.</div>

By carefully analyzing the wear traces of the Iceman’s chert tools, the authors concluded he was right-handed and probably had recently resharpened and reshaped some of his equipment.</div>
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: #222222; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "open sans" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">

These findings shed light into the Iceman’s personal history and support previous evidence suggesting that alpine Copper Age communities maintained long-distance cultural contacts and were well provisioned with chert.</div>

Scientists have shown that at the Anzick site in Montana – the only known Clovis burial site – the skeletal remains of a young child and the antler and stone artifacts found there were buried at the same time, raising new questions about the early inhabitants of North America, says a Texas A&M University professor involved in the research.</span></h3>
<div style="border: 0px rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; display: block; font-family: "quot"; font-weight: 400; line-height: 25.33px; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Michael Waters, director of the Center for the Study of the First Americans and colleagues from the University of Oxford and Stafford Research of Colorado have had their work published in the current issue of <em style="border: 0px rgb(34, 34, 34); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">PNAS</em> (<em style="border: 0px rgb(34, 34, 34); margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em>).</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; display: block; font-family: "quot"; font-weight: 400; line-height: 25.33px; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">The main focus of the team’s research centered on properly dating the Anzick site which is named after the family who own the land. The site was discovered in 1968 by construction workers, who found the human remains and stone tools which include Clovis spear points and antler tools. It is the only known Clovis burial site and is associated with Clovis stone and antler artifacts.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; display: block; font-family: "quot"; font-weight: 400; line-height: 25.33px; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">“One thing that has always been a problem has been the accurate dating of the human remains from the site,” explains Waters.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; display: block; font-family: "quot"; font-weight: 400; line-height: 25.33px; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">“The human remains yielded a younger age that was not in agreement with the ages from the antler artifacts which dated older than the human remains. If the human remains and Clovis artifacts were contemporaneous, they should be the same age.” To resolve the issue, the team used a process called Specific Amino Acid Radiocarbon Dating, which allows a specific amino acid, in this case hydroxyproline, to be isolated from the human bones.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; display: block; font-family: "quot"; font-weight: 400; line-height: 25.33px; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">“This amino acid could only have come from the human skeleton and could not be contaminated,” Waters adds.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; display: block; font-family: "quot"; font-weight: 400; line-height: 25.33px; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">“The other previous ages suffered from some sort of contamination. With the new method, we got very accurate and secure ages for the human remains based on dating hydroxyproline. As a test, we also redated the antler artifacts using this technique.”</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; display: block; font-family: "quot"; font-weight: 400; line-height: 25.33px; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">The results prove that both the human remains and antler Clovis artifacts are of the same date.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; display: block; font-family: "quot"; font-weight: 400; line-height: 25.33px; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">“The human remains and Clovis artifacts can now be confidently shown to be the same age and date between 12,725 to 12,900 years ago,” Waters notes. “This is right in the middle to the end of the Clovis time period which ranges from 13,000 to 12,700 years ago.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; display: block; font-family: "quot"; font-weight: 400; line-height: 25.33px; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">“This is important because we have resolved the dating issues at the site. Some researchers had argued that the human remains were not Clovis and were younger than the Clovis artifacts, based on the earlier radiocarbon dates. We have shown that they are the same age and confirmed that the Anzick site represents a Clovis burial.”</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; display: block; font-family: "quot"; font-weight: 400; line-height: 25.33px; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">While not the earliest inhabitants of the Americas, Clovis is the first widespread prehistoric culture that first appeared 13,000 years ago. Clovis originated south of the large Ice Sheets that covered Canada at that time and are the direct descendants of the earliest people who arrived in the New World around 15,000 years ago. Clovis people fashioned their stone spear tips with grooved, or fluted, bases. They invented the “Clovis point,’ a spear-shaped weapon made of stone that is found in Texas and other portions of the United States and northern Mexico, and these weapons were used to hunt animals</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; display: block; font-family: "quot"; font-weight: 400; line-height: 25.33px; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">The researchers say the findings will also help geneticists in their estimates of the timing of the peopling of the Americas because the Anzick genome is critical to understanding early settlements and the origin of modern Native peoples.</span></div>

<strong style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;">NOTE:</strong> Aboriginal People is one term for what we used to call native North American Indians or Eskimos although those terms have recently been replaced with Native Canadians or Aboriginal Canadians. It seems that one Toronto-based laboratory that tests people’s DNA to determine their ancestry has been caught providing “proof” of such ancestry, even when the DNA doesn’t prove it. The scam was caught when one Canadian became suspicious and submitted a DNA sample from his girlfriend’s dog for analysis.</div>

The results from DNA testing company Viaguard Accu-Metrics “proved” that Snoopy the Chihuahua has 20 per cent Native American ancestry: 12 per cent Abenaki and eight per cent Mohawk.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; word-wrap: break-word;">
<span id="more-23119" style="box-sizing: border-box;"></span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; word-wrap: break-word;">
The test was repeated. On the second attempt, a French Poodle was “proven” to have five per cent Native American ancestry: two per cent Oji-Cree, two per cent Saulteaux and one per cent Mississauga.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; word-wrap: break-word;">
A third test was conducted, this time with DNA samples from three humans, all of whom are CBC employees: Two were born in India and the third was born in Russia, and none was aware of any ancestral connections to North America’s Indigenous populations. As a check, DNA samples from the same three also were submitted to 23andMe. As you may have guessed by now, the results returned by the two companies were wildly different. The results from 23andMe found none of the CBC employees’ DNA was of Native American origin. Rather, greater than 99.8 per cent of their DNA was reported as being linked to the regions where they were born.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; word-wrap: break-word;">
The test results from <a href="http://www.accu-metrics.com/" rel="noopener" style="background-attachment: scroll; background-clip: border-box; background-color: transparent; background-image: none; background-origin: padding-box; background-position-x: 0px; background-position-y: 0px; background-repeat: repeat; background-size: auto; box-sizing: border-box; color: #80949c; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Viaguard Accu-Metrics</a> claimed that all three CBC employees have 20 per cent Native American DNA. The results were broken down further, linking them to specific First Nations communities. <a href="http://www.accu-metrics.com/" rel="noopener" style="background-attachment: scroll; background-clip: border-box; background-color: transparent; background-image: none; background-origin: padding-box; background-position-x: 0px; background-position-y: 0px; background-repeat: repeat; background-size: auto; box-sizing: border-box; color: #80949c; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Viaguard Accu-Metric</a> determined that the DNA of each of the three individuals was 12 per cent Abanaki and eight per cent Mohawk.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; word-wrap: break-word;">
A subsequent CBC News investigation has found there are not only concerns about the accuracy of the DNA tests but also about the possible fraudulent use of cards resembling certificates of Indian status to secure tax exemptions the holders aren’t entitled to.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; word-wrap: break-word;">
Canada Revenue Agency, the RCMP, and the Sûreté du Quebec are now investigating Viaguard Accu-Metrics as well as the tax exemption use of identification cards used by people who claim to have Aboriginal Canadian ancestry.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; word-wrap: break-word;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Every so often I go check one of my favorite websites, and type in a random family member's name and info, just to see if something new has come up. It's been a long while since I'd been "surfing" on<b><i> FindAGrave</i></b>, a web site that hold thousands of photos of tombstones and cemeteries.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This weekend I went surfing there again, after a couple of years of not being on it. (When you work full-time, you sometimes just don't have the time to go searching like you'd really desire to! Now with a disability, and home all the time, I have much more time to spend doing those things I love doing, namely, research and writing!)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It had been a while since I'd looked for more information on my husband's family. At the age of two his parents were divorced. He never knew his Dad, and by the time he and I went looking for him, it was too late. So we have worked, off and on for twenty years trying to reconstruct his family history. A couple of years back I located photographs of his Dad's tombstone. It's the closest thing to a photograph he has of his Dad, and we plan to make a trip to Mississippi one day to visit his Dad's grave. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This weekend while "surfing" the site, I located his grandparents, great-grandparents, and even his great-great-grandparents graves. They are only over in Kentucky. We live in West Virginia, and may be able to actually go there soon to visit the graves. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We've been twenty years accumulating this information. Knew the where, but had no photographs. So, we are thrilled with the information we found! Some even contained obituaries. What a find!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Sometimes, it pays to go back and recheck those sites you've already been to for new information. Especially sites that are frequently updated. You just never know what you may find!</div>

The U.S. Supreme Court made gay marriage legal in every state, but the LDS Church’s FamilySearch massive genealogy databank still hasn’t listed same-sex couples. However, change is coming to the genealogy resource — and soon.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As I find myself with more and more time to do those things that truly bring me pleasure, I look forward to afternoon tea. Sometimes with shortbread biscuits. Sometimes with scones. Sometimes simply the tea. But always with the beautiful crockery I have been gifted and inherited.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I find that as I age, I am drawn to more genteel activity, and those things that I truly savor. Tea time being one of those things.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There is something about sitting on the covered porch in the afternoon and sipping a cup of soothing tea while reading a good book. If I'm lucky, someone will drop by and share a cup with me, which is why the tray always carries two cups. A linen napkin covers the biscuits and the creamer or lemon wedges. (One really must know which to add, cream or lemon, to which tea!) I occasionally add sugar, but that is rare these days. I prefer the taste of the tea itself. There's enough sweet in the biscuits or jam for the scones.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Sometimes I simply sit back on my seat and allow the warm summer air to flow over me as I feel myself drift away into a day dream of an era gone by, and I am transported back to a large manor house surrounded by rolling fields. Am I in America? England? Ireland? Scotland? I do not know. But it's tea time. And it's a warm day and I sit in a garden walled in by beautiful roses. There I read, or write in my diary.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When company has arrived, I dare not allow myself such luxury as day dreaming. Instead, I relish the conversation as we share our tea. I can see that she/he is nervous about the china cup and saucer and would rather have tea in a heavy mug instead, for here, today, that is what most people use. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We speak of the fine weather, and the gentle breeze that helps keep the mountain area cooler than at lower altitudes. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We talk of the flowers in bloom. And if my body will allow me we will cut a bouquet of flowers for them to take home with them.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once they leave, I gather the tray and make my way back into the house. And I am transported back to the 21st century. The dishes must be washed up. And before long dinner must be started. My husband comes out of his office and lets me know he has finished with his computer for a while. He thinks he will take a nap before dinner.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I fill the sink with hot soapy water and wash up the tea things. I dry them carefully and put them away. Left over biscuits or scones are wrapped carefully for tomorrow at tea time. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The tea pot placed back upon the shelf, I am fully back to this day and time. Where deadlines are to be met. And writing to be done. And housework that must be finished before days end. Already, I am waiting for tomorrow and my journey into afternoon tea once more.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div>
The other day my youngest child sent me the above combo pic. On the left is her today at almost 34. That's me on the right at only 15. Uhhhh….guess there's not much chance I could say she isn't mine is there? Pretty uncanny, huh?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO5Ju3bsNWBWpkw1AQRifwlE33Xw4Ah3SthO6EnJVLS0wuqfSJVOKSaocJpT7Z7vimTcr8W9MJOcpq8fmLpiTiqrE5X1Gaw2oy5g27eaeaWt4TFm-PJ560-RXSr-m927uG_HPDFQDD38LG/s1600/LOISHI_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="548" data-original-width="388" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO5Ju3bsNWBWpkw1AQRifwlE33Xw4Ah3SthO6EnJVLS0wuqfSJVOKSaocJpT7Z7vimTcr8W9MJOcpq8fmLpiTiqrE5X1Gaw2oy5g27eaeaWt4TFm-PJ560-RXSr-m927uG_HPDFQDD38LG/s320/LOISHI_2.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div>
Now look between me and this woman. Notice a resemblance? Except for the nose and hairstyle, we look the same! That's my mother when she was 18, just 3 years older than me in the photo above. This was her Senior High School portrait. Beautiful wasn't she?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcIBqMt5ZqIZBjjuP5JqqvvSCJd_gsYeiQfGXU1EsqvOvMe3iATNEfrhQwrlvfKXsCNN8D0QM-TWqg7uLnOvxBuKzogdA5JVKReQVc4rnIBd7joPRVF8j94mgkwUwOjJkN2EbX1KU4nRKD/s1600/JOSEPH_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="323" data-original-width="286" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcIBqMt5ZqIZBjjuP5JqqvvSCJd_gsYeiQfGXU1EsqvOvMe3iATNEfrhQwrlvfKXsCNN8D0QM-TWqg7uLnOvxBuKzogdA5JVKReQVc4rnIBd7joPRVF8j94mgkwUwOjJkN2EbX1KU4nRKD/s320/JOSEPH_3.jpg" width="283" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now look at this woman. Look at my mother, and then me. You see the similarities? This is my great-grandmother. (My mother's father's mother.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And then there are such similarities on my dad's side as well!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8ArRoZDZbZfKV8WRvxJariPlD38nrV756iTQnFgJvjIkNgUpigEZrF9jbyfdR-1JRzJtPiZ4qhfFnwpS9y_tiYdOZHUuYtUb51JZZJ40Zc2txIIEWZ7Bf6720KwQvhmD0C7nwdv7GwWuT/s1600/BUSTER_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="956" data-original-width="685" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8ArRoZDZbZfKV8WRvxJariPlD38nrV756iTQnFgJvjIkNgUpigEZrF9jbyfdR-1JRzJtPiZ4qhfFnwpS9y_tiYdOZHUuYtUb51JZZJ40Zc2txIIEWZ7Bf6720KwQvhmD0C7nwdv7GwWuT/s400/BUSTER_2.jpg" width="286" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
Now look at this young fella here. Notice any resemblance between him and me? Look at that nose! Yes, you guessed right. That's my dad. Just a year older than me in the pic above.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzMMbvfuiV_qcBWTTfsWJB2HCQUBZWW0-gHIlthumEPjmDr51gTl1PcQlFEK1S3snPbgwLPJxhPS9KZXjPguuIL2vJ1xXI-BIhvghQZy9BRwHqUKRaqlG9H2FWKxAHF7gttuMy1Jax77P2/s1600/MARY19_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="260" data-original-width="180" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzMMbvfuiV_qcBWTTfsWJB2HCQUBZWW0-gHIlthumEPjmDr51gTl1PcQlFEK1S3snPbgwLPJxhPS9KZXjPguuIL2vJ1xXI-BIhvghQZy9BRwHqUKRaqlG9H2FWKxAHF7gttuMy1Jax77P2/s400/MARY19_1.jpg" width="276" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And this one? Look at those eye brows and brow ridge? Yes, that's my dad's mother, my grandmother.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtT56mupMldwJG1Ms0nsLaH9CGo849A5RU38E7NSrQsm4rIoCIP2m4P07ywjjjmSTTGX8WpPyRikKKNW-CZAj3jur7Y1JXkE5lSsWQXlO_9fxLTIFlwdQhsmO2NdwlO584YjOy5Sy-zD1T/s1600/JOHN%2526M_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="618" data-original-width="415" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtT56mupMldwJG1Ms0nsLaH9CGo849A5RU38E7NSrQsm4rIoCIP2m4P07ywjjjmSTTGX8WpPyRikKKNW-CZAj3jur7Y1JXkE5lSsWQXlO_9fxLTIFlwdQhsmO2NdwlO584YjOy5Sy-zD1T/s640/JOHN%2526M_4.jpg" width="428" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Now this one is a little tougher. See the gentleman here? That's my dad's dad, or my grandfather. Not much physically resembling him here. Or so you would think.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_Lyz4inQC4nXL1ObVaYu-nJGDKCTvtg1qzNaUbtyHsCJnxqFzrdGQElqDI5SyKJr21vFOQ3u6s56J-HCLb1C3NPn_1QS3LiAZEvGrK80zfVobnYPBSvT1Pc0OHNE9HCCE7EoI4Wtpy0to/s1600/IMG_2512.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_Lyz4inQC4nXL1ObVaYu-nJGDKCTvtg1qzNaUbtyHsCJnxqFzrdGQElqDI5SyKJr21vFOQ3u6s56J-HCLb1C3NPn_1QS3LiAZEvGrK80zfVobnYPBSvT1Pc0OHNE9HCCE7EoI4Wtpy0to/s400/IMG_2512.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Now look at the two men in the middle of this photo. That's my dad on the right, and his brother, Jack, on the left. Now look at the man above. Eerily alike!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb85X9f26aXNSAZKcl4uO4XHZSE9PiYvlgVxz5ye9OyJv6FqL74FjoSJvQ4DYMmzy-THIICqVm8T1GvKfBtLqBa0jsYJga8uuXCXxNyFDba24zO5ytggMYok0QwqusqyagHBwMJF_N3vnR/s1600/MARGAR_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="174" data-original-width="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb85X9f26aXNSAZKcl4uO4XHZSE9PiYvlgVxz5ye9OyJv6FqL74FjoSJvQ4DYMmzy-THIICqVm8T1GvKfBtLqBa0jsYJga8uuXCXxNyFDba24zO5ytggMYok0QwqusqyagHBwMJF_N3vnR/s1600/MARGAR_3.jpg" /></a></div>
This is a sister of the two men, Margaret. She passed away a few years ago. Around the mouth, and the obvious very white shock of hair<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQdGamaag2HS9EdSlR3nycpcKAeNQqvmWvHg55SfepZJnAaZZt6fEulBbO2IEqO2BEjtiuUnCBmx18m7K9vgWAbMf9TKBzZCZICk6jgxatPmJhRlWrWtFGGNn1-aNxXdm4_whbB6gSjqXQ/s1600/me.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="960" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQdGamaag2HS9EdSlR3nycpcKAeNQqvmWvHg55SfepZJnAaZZt6fEulBbO2IEqO2BEjtiuUnCBmx18m7K9vgWAbMf9TKBzZCZICk6jgxatPmJhRlWrWtFGGNn1-aNxXdm4_whbB6gSjqXQ/s320/me.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div>
And finally, look at this one. Look at that white hair! (I'm only 58!)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We are often an amalgamation of our parents and grandparents, and even our great-grandparents! I look at myself in the mirror and I see my mother, and my father, my grandmother Beane, my aunts and uncles. There's that Faudree nose from my dad's mother's family. Chubby cheeks from there as well. My mother's smile. Her brow arch. The shockingly white hair of my grandpa Beane. The height and heavy build of my Grandpa Dreher (mom's dad). I don't see any of my mom's mother in me. But I do have the height and build of her father, my great-grandfather Banet. Tall, big man. (Shame I didn't take after my great-grandmother Banet's family, the Eve's. Tiny petite women who lived to ripe old ages and never had any gray hair!) But then, I'd have to use a step stool to reach my top cupboards! Ha ha.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Who do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you see your parents? Your grandparents? Aunts? Uncles?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One thing for certain....my daughter can say she pretty much knows what she'll look like when she reaches my age! The gray hairs are arriving as I speak! LOL</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<br />
Okay, let me see a show of hands here....How many of you have ever been surfing through online resources or books and came across a juicy mention of an ancestor and became so excited that you immediately recorded the information, documented it and got the citation correct. You were so excited to put it into your genealogy program, and suddenly.. you are gobsmacked! (yeah, I know, that Appalachian gal and Irish/English/Scot gal sometimes gets all mixed together and I come out with a singular phrase that no one in America recognizes, except the old timers in the mountains, or the English. Like "gobsmacked".) There before you, clearly your own entry in your genealogy program, is the exact same information, from the exact same source!<br />
<br />
Yeah, that's what I thought! Everyone has their hand raised!!!<br />
<br />
Yes, we've all done it. And that's the precise reason why you should keep a research log. I keep one on each individual in my program. Why? Well, before I go either busily copying by hand, or paying for a copy at the library or courthouse, I check my research logs to see if I already have the same information on that particular individual. No need in looking and doing all of that if I already have it!<br />
<br />
I know some individuals however, who if they are looking into a source where they know they've already looked before, won't look for that person again. Well, anyone who has been doing this for very long won't mind telling you it's okay to take a second look! Or even a 3rd or a 4th! I've found information several times after I thought I'd exhausted the source before! So it never hurts to look again.<br />
<br />
The waste comes when you copy down the same info again and again. By keeping a research log, this will help you eliminate that, and give you time to look elsewhere for new info!<br />
<br />
I have a 6-inch research log, which contains everyone in my tree. Each individual has their own Research Log. (For time, I simply alphabetize this binder's pages.) It makes for a bulky addition when going to a courthouse or historical society to do research in my backpack. But one that has saved me countless quarters in a copier, or many dollars for a vital record.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yes, I'm probably known as the "bag lady" when they see me coming! My backpack is a regular large daypack, with bright neon yellow trim (in case I become lost amongst the stacks of books or records, rescuers will be able to find me in the dark!). Seriously, keep a research log. You can save the pdf or Word Doc file of a really nice one over at<b><i> <a href="https://www.familytreemagazine.com/" target="_blank">Family Tree Magazine</a></i></b> (this is where I have received ALL of my research forms absolutely free). While there, you can also read and download several books that will be of invaluable assistance to researching your ancestry. There are even classes you can take! Books you can purchase! And they have an awesome magazine that comes out every other month!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Shhhh!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm gonna share a secret recipe with you! The easiest cookies you have ever made in your life! Takes only 4 ingredients and about 30 minutes from start to dipping in the milk!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When my children were all in elementary school they made a recipe book for Mother's Day for me. Full of delicious recipes that other mother's from the school had donated for the booklet. I really didn't see much I hadn't seen before. But my youngest son, Micheal, did. He saw a recipe for peanut butter cookies. And he made them himself. He was probably 9 or 10 at the time. And they were delicious.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Before long, Micheal was making the cookies all the time! And they were so inexpensive to make, and easy that we were soon calling them Micheal's secret recipe cookies! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm feeling a little nostalgic today, and thought I'd whip up a batch. And so I thought perhaps you'd enjoy getting a taste of Micheal's Secret Recipe Cookies, as well. (Now, let me let you in a secret...not long ago I came across a recipe card that my Granny Dreher had written down for me when I started housekeeping as a new bride. And guess what...that very same recipe was written on it. I'd had the recipe the whole time!) But I'll always call them Micheal's Secret Recipe Cookies. Ahhh….I miss those days!</div>

I read this great article over on the<b><i> Ancestry.com Blog.</i></b> I really thought it should be shared today. I hope it helps you in your pursuit of goal setting for genealogy in your family as much as it has helped me.<br />
<b></b><i></i><b></b><i></i><br />
"Genealogists wear many hats — researcher, writer, preservationist, archivist. We always want more time to track down our elusive ancestors, but if you inherited family photos, documents, or keepsakes, there’s no time like the present to safely preserve your treasures for the next generation.</div>

Get those old photos out of flimsy shoeboxes and into acid-free archival storage boxes, also known as Hollinger Boxes. These heavy-weight boxes are designed to resist slight temperature fluctuations and moisture, and protect the contents from dust, pests, and light.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: #181a1c; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "source sans pro" , "helvetica neue" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">

Look for true archival boxes like those sold to the Library of Congress and university archives. Typically manufactured in the United States to rigorous standards, archival storage containers may be made of acid-free “board,” paper, or plastic. Avoid any kind of recycled product because the content and quality is unknown. Purchase plastic enclosures and containers that have passed the Photographic Activity Test (PAT), a lab test measuring photo stability within a plastic enclosure. If you’ve ever encountered faded and damaged photos in an old “magnetic” type photo album, you’ve seen evidence of poor quality plastic and paper storage. Check out recommended safe archival products at <a href="https://thefamilycurator.com/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #005c7d; cursor: pointer; text-decoration: underline;">TheFamilyCurator.com</a>.</div>

Investigate your options for digitizing family photos, papers, and keepsakes, and then scan or photograph depending on the item. Protect your family legacy with multiple digital copies. Don’t throw away the original; think of that old black and white photo as another “backup” copy. Use an easy-to-remember habit such as “Backup 3-2-1,” three copies, two different media, one copy offsite. Three copies could include the original digital file on your computer, and two more copies. Use different storage media such as an external hard drive, cloud service, DVD backup, or another server. Insure the survival of your digital files by keeping one copy offsite, away from your home where natural and man-made disasters could damage or destroy your files. With the low cost of digital storage, cloud services are an excellent choice for offsite file storage.</div>

Make this year, the year you bring your family history out of the binders and file folders to share the people and their stories with your family and friends. Find new and exciting ways to enjoy old pictures and stories by following genealogy blogs, Facebook groups, Pinterest boards, and Instagram accounts. What’s old is new again, and lifestyle magazines have caught on to “vintage” and “family history” decorating and craft trends. Look beyond a numbered genealogy for ways to share your family history.</div>

Are you a family historian without many family keepsakes? Before assuming that your ancestors just “didn’t keep things,” reach out to cousin connections to ask about old photographs, family records, or a family Bible. Newfound cousins through DNA testing might hold the answer to your brick-wall problems. Many times, family collections are passed down to the eldest, or youngest, or sometimes a distant relation. With name changes through marriage, it can be difficult to track those wayward heirlooms.</div>

Are you one of the millions of genealogists who sent off a DNA sample, but aren’t quite sure what to do next? New resources and expert guidebooks like Blaine Bettinger’s <a href="https://thefamilycurator.com/easy-digital-filenaming-to-organize-genealogy-files" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #005c7d; cursor: pointer; text-decoration: underline;"><em style="box-sizing: border-box; font-style: italic; font-weight: 400;">Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy</em></a> can help you make sense of this exciting new genealogy tool. Think about DNA as one more genealogical data source to investigate.</div>

Remember the first time you looked at a census report? All those rows and columns may have seemed overwhelming, but with training and practice, the census can yield valuable clues to family lives. Enroll in a course, view webinars, or study a book on the basics of genetic genealogy to build your skills and connect with newfound cousins. Go beyond adding names to your family tree. Reach out to ask about family heirlooms too."</div>
