Amaneunsis Monday - Emmette Beane

This report is a partial Muster Log from the USS Buttress, a minelayer during World War II.

It shows that on the first day of August 1945, on Line 3, Emmette Lorimer Beane, and EM1c [Electrician's Mate First Class] was present. Emmette came on board just shortly after this ship was commissioned and underewent alterations to make it a minelayer. He was aboard until later in 1945, when he was discharged from the service.

Emmette Lorimer Beane was born 12 Jul 1910 in Monroe County, West Virginia to John Monroe Bean [1866-1954] and Ada L. Burdette [1883-1929]. He was the second child born to Ada, while John had three children from a previous marriage, so Emmette was his fifth.

In 1935, at the age of 25, Emmette married Katie Carlisle. This marriage ended in divorce. And in 1940, he married Elizabeth Miller.

Emmette served in the US Navy during WWII.

Emmette enlisted on 17 Dec 1943, in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Following training, he became an Engine Mate and was stationed aboard USS BUTTRESS from April 1944 until August 1945, when he'd already been promoted to EM1C [Engine Mate First Class].

Following the war, Emmette and his wife settled in Monroe County, West Virginia. A few years later they moved on to Washington state.

Emmette died in 1988 from cancer. He was my Dad's brother.

Sentimental Sunday - My Uncle Emmette

Growing up Uncle Emmette and his wife, Aunt Betty, came to visit occasionally. Not often, but on occasion.

Uncle Emmette was Dad's older brother. He was so unlike my Dad, but I knew that Dad had a great deal of respect for him and Aunt Betty. As an older brother, Uncle Emmette tried to help my grandparents raise Dad and get him started out in life on the right foot. Both Grandpa and Grandpa were up in years when Dad was born [Grandma was 40 and Grandpa was 71.] They must've done something right, 'cause my Dad's a pretty special fellow!

Emmette Lorimer Beane was born 12 July 1910 in West Virginia.

This is a one year old Uncle Emmette!

He married Elizabeth [aka: Betty] Miller in 1940. Unfortunately they could not have children.

I can still remember the last time I saw Uncle Emmette. It was just a year before he died. How I wish I had taken the time to sit down and really talk with him and Aunt Betty.

All too soon Uncle Emmette was gone.Cancer had wasted his body, and we all know the duress that puts someone under, as well as their family.

When he got the call, it was one of the very few times in my life I saw my Dad cry.

Emmette Lorimer Beane died 20 May 1988.

We miss him still.
