Family Recipe Friday - Jefferson Davis Pie

You'll find this recipe with several names, Jeff Davis Pie, Jefferson Davis Pie, The Confederate Pie, Chess Pie, The South Will Rise Again Pie, and the list could go on and on! You'll see by it's simple ingredients that it is literally a dessert that was put together by cooks who did not have ingredients for a dessert, and who simply threw together what they had available. This was probably necessitated by the Civil War, when ingredients would have been hard to come by!

I can remember my Grandma Bean making this, although she called Custard Pie, and my Grandma Dreher making this, and she called it Chess pie. My Mother-in-Law, Betty Rotge Custer, also made this, and she called the Jeff Davis Pie. Whatever you choose to call it, this recipe is tried and true! I have included this delicious recipe for whipped topping, which comes exclusively from http://sweetteaandcornbread.blogspot.com/2013/05/jefferson-davis-pie.html  and to whom I am reminded of this delicious recipe from their recent post of it!

This is a special, easy recipe and can be thrown together in a jiffy!

Enjoy!

Jefferson Davis Pie

Ingredients:
deep, dish pie shell, unbaked
1-cup sugar
1-cup brown sugar
1- Tbsp. flour
1/4-tsp. nutmeg
1/4-tsp. cinnamon
1-cup whipping cream [I have used half-n-half]
4-eggs, slightly beaten
1/2-cup butter, melted
1- Tbsp. lemon juice
1/8-tsp salt
1-tsp vanilla

Preparation:
Preheat oven to 400°.
Mix the sugars, flour, nutmeg and cinnamon.
Add cream and mix.
Add eggs and stir well.
Add butter, lemon juice, salt and vanilla and mix well.
Place the pie pan on a cookie sheet. Pour the mixture into the pie shell. Bake for 10 minutes then reduce heat to 350° and bake for another 45 minutes. [The pie puffs while baking, but will settle once it begins to cool.]
Cool and serve with whipped cream.

Please use the Kentucky Bourbon Whipped Cream recipe from the above web site for the absolute best tasting whipped cream ever!

Family Recipe Friday - Meal In A Crock Pot

Crock Pot Dinner

I haven't been making this dinner long, but it is one we have returned to several times over the past few months, and will probably use it for the rest of our lives!

Simple and easy, you put this one on to cook, walk away and forget it until time to serve it! A complete meal in a single pot!

I use an 8.5 quart crockpot, because it's the largest I have, but you can certainly adjust the size to suit your family's needs.

Ingredients:
Crock pot [slow cooker]
meat of your choice [we have used steak, roast, chicken and pork chops so far!]
a bottle of steak sauce or BBQ sauce of your choosing
baking potatoes
short ears of corn [we use Green Giant frozen nibblers]

Directions:
Place your meat of choice in the bottom of the crock pot and pour the entire bottle of sauce over it.
Place a layer of aluminum foil over this [I use heavy duty foil].
Wash potatoes. Lightly oil and wrap individually in aluminum foil. Place these on the single layer of foil in the pot.
Place another layer of foil over the potatoes.
Wrap each ear of corn in foil and place on the last layer of foil.
Depending upon the setting of your slow cooker, you may have to adjust your heat controls.
I set my heat on High for 5 hours or Low for 8.
Remove each item from the slow cooker.
Slice the meat for serving.
And serve!

My family loves this!!! And you spend maybe 5 minutes preparing it!

Give it a try!

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun

Randy has given us another great challenge this week!

From Randy Seaver over at Genea-Musings

"Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music, please!):

The challenge:  Find a living male person in your database from your maternal grandmother's patrilineal line who could take a Y-chromosome DNA test. Answer these questions:

1) What was your mother's mother's name?

2) What is your mother's mother's patrilineal line? That is, her father's father's father's ... back to the most distant male ancestor in that line?

3) Can you identify male sibling(s) of your mother's mother, and any living male descendants from those male sibling(s)? If so, you have a candidate to do a Y-DNA test on that patrilineal line. If not, you may have to find male siblings, and their descendants, of the next generation back, or even further.

4)  Tell us about it in your own blog post, or in a comment on this post, or in a Facebook or Google Plus post."

My mother's mother was Irene Caroline Banet.

Irene's father was Francis Isidore Banet [also known as "Frank".

Irene had several brothers:

Robert Benjamin Banet [1894-1970]

Arthur Matthias Banet [1896-1974]

Charles Franklin Banet [1898-1976]

Augustin Philip Banet [1900-1978]

Francis Eugene Banet [1902-1983]

Clarence J. Banet [1904-1986]

Of these many brothers, there are 4 sons among them that remain living. These sons would make DNA testing possible for the patrilineal line.

Thanks again Randy for a great evening's fun!
