Johnnie Lee HENRY and Cynthia Ann BEANE were married in Covington, Alleghany

Co., VA. They had no children.

Joseph Wright HENRY son of William Lee HENRY and Emma Louise PETTIE was born on 20 Sep

1927 in Fulton County, KY. He died on 16 Nov 1993 in Batesville, Panola, Mississippi.

Betty Louise Rotge daughter of John Cornelius ROTGE and Ora Lee Sparks was born on 30 Aug

1930 in Kerrville, Kerr, Texas. She died on 05 Jul 2003 in Jourdanton, Atascosa, Texas.

Joseph Wright HENRY and Betty Louise Rotge were married on 30 Jul 1947.

Generation 3
John Cornelius ROTGE son of Peter ROTGE and Lillie Mae Surber was born on 16 Jan 1910. He

died on 09 Jun 1983 in Kerrville, Kerr, Texas.

Ora Lee Sparks daughter of William Jacob Sparks and Laura May Clements was born on 26 Oct

1914 in Bandera, Edwards, Texas. She died in Aug 1982 in San Antonio, Bexar, Texas.

Family Recipe Friday - Peanut Butter Brownies

Peanut Butter Brownies

This is a recipe I learned many years ago from an old Amish cookbook. I have only slightly adapted it over the years, and find that it is quite the most delicious peanut butter brownie I have ever eaten. [My adaptation? The recipe makes a double batch, according to the cookbook. I put it all in one pan, making it a single batch. Having done that… I had to alter the baking temperature and time.]


4 cups all purpose flour

2 cups granulated sugar

1 ½ tablespoons baking powder

1 ½ teaspoons salt

½ cup shortening

4 eggs

1 ½ cups peanut butter

2 teaspoons vanilla extract


1] Preheat the oven to 325-degrees. Spray a 9” x 13” baking pan with non-stick baking spray. Set aside.

2] In a large bowl, cream sugar, shortening, eggs and peanut butter.

3] In a second bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt.

4] Mix vanilla into first bowl. Then slowly add the dry ingredients, being sure to incorporate them well. [This is a very thick, heavy batter.]

5] Spoon the batter into the prepared baking pan. Pressing it into the pan. This will not be smooth, and is not a “pretty” batter. So don’t try to make it into one! [It’ll drive you crazy if you try!]

6] Bake for approximately 45-minutes. When the edges are nicely browned, and inserting a knife into the center results in only a small amount of batter sticking to it, then it is done. [The edges get that delicious crunch to them, while the center of each square will be soft and chewy!]

Allow them to cool somewhat before cutting into squares.

You can serve this warm with a single scoop of vanilla ice-cream if you like. Or simply allow the brownies to cool, and serve with cold milk!

This is a real favorite in our house. And I bet it will be in yours as well!

Treasure Chest Thursday - Grandpa Bean

I never knew the man. He was gone a few years short of my birth, so the chance to even meet him, much less know him was never mine.
Yet, within me lies a knowledge of the man. His genuine love for his children. All fifteen of them. And yes, all three of his wives.
For many years now I have made a study of the man. His oddities. And his quirks. His kindness. And his anger [which I feel was seldom ever seen!]. He was in fact, a gentle man. And a gentleman.
Born just 20 months after the end of the Civil War, his family moved in the dead of winter by oxen pulled wagon when he was but days old. Carried next to the bosom of his mother, within her dress and cloak to keep warm, he teased that his short stature and slight build were stunted by the freezing cold of the move!
Much as I do today, he was a scholar of his family’s history. He knew more about them than I could ever learn by following paper trail. And he kept it all in his head.
I look at his photograph, and see my own father, who has an uncanny resemblance. Although his hair isn’t quite as white as Grandpa’s. And like his father, my father carries on the oral tradition of family lore. Like them I tell the stories, but in my own way. Recording them on a whirring computer that I hope will be accessible for future generations. And yes, like my father, and even more like my grandfather, my own hair has gone snow white. And I have only reached my 52nd year thusfar. [I began going white-haired at only 35, but kept my hair dyed until 4 years ago.]
He lived to be an old man. 88 years of age.  And in that time, he knew heart ache and tragedy.
His grandfather was killed just two years before his birth. Shot in the head while leading the Home Guard on a chase to arrest renegade soldiers who were stealing from the community. January 1, 1864. Then in 1890, his father, namesake to his grandfather, was also killed. Shot in the head, by a zealous constable. His mother dying a short year later. Both in their fifties. Two years later, an older brother died from stomach ulcers at just 39 years of age.
He later lost a wife to tuberculosis, as well as two children to the disease. His second wife died from toxemia, following the birth of her last child. He lost a son to whooping cough. Then he married a third time, and lost yet another son, to appendicitis.
Yes, I know this man. The heart ache. The dreams. The never satisfied desire for success, yet the demand within to keep searching. Keep trying. Keep pushing on. The determination to make it. Not for one’s self. But for family.
It’s taken me many years to come to know this man as intimately as I do. And I consider it a treasure worth much, much more than any monetary amount.
I tease and say that I have put in my order for when I get to heaven. I want to be 5-foot-two, eyes of blue, and have blond hair. And above all….be model thin! [I stand 5-feet-10, have had black hair but it is white now, have brown eyes, and have always been a large size!] But the truth is, when I arrive at heaven, I expect that my Grandpa will be waiting for me. See, we have a lot in common. And so very many questions I have to ask him, the answers which went to the grave with him! And I am sure he will wish to be caught up as well!
If there is a place in heaven for genealogists, and I’m sure there is, after all, genealogies and family trees are spread throughout both the Old and New Testaments in the Bible, then Grandpa and I will be seated at a table and poring over ours!
And I bet you’ve got a family member like that you can’t wait to see one day in the hereafter as well!

We Are Back!

We’re Back!!!!

Yes, we’ve been gone three long weeks, and we’re still not complete with the project we’ve been working on.

I’ve been sick on top of everything. Terrible migraines and neck and shoulder pain. They’ve kept me debilitated for the last 14 days. But I think I am finally on the mend, and hope to have my current project completed within the next week! Hurray! [I’m sure my client will be glad!]

I’ve missed chatting on my various blogs daily. And I’ve missed not being able to read all of the ones I so enjoy!

Isn’t it funny how addicted to our online life we’ve become! I believe I actually went through withdrawal! [LOL]

You can be sure, there were some blogs I saved so that I could catch up on later!

No, no, no… if I mention one, and forget another one, well, you know, I don’t want anyone to feel left out! So, let’s just keep it that I’ll be catching up over the next few days!

I’ve become kind of lazy this past year. I’ve been simply doing the daily blogging prompts, and little else. So while I’ve been out sick, I’ve determined myself to at least write one or two true writing posts a week. [So much of the blogging prompts have become rote for me! And I can put them together without much thought, in no time at all!] So, be watching for those little “extra” posts that will be coming your way.

It’s so good to be back! It’s almost like….coming home!

Howdy ya’all! Why don’t ya drop by tomorrow for some homemade cookies and sweet tea? We can set on the porch and share the afternoon together!

Family Recipe Friday - Chicken Enchiladas

In keeping with the Family Recipe Friday theme, as I explained last week, I will be exploring the recipes that I love and use all the time. I hope to incorporate these into a cookbook that I will hand down to my granddaughters one day!

Chicken Enchiladas

3- medium chicken breasts – baked and shredded
12 – corn tortillas [8-10 inch]
1-      Large [family size] can of condensed cream of chicken soup
2 – cups finely shredded cheddar and queso cheese mixed - divided
Small tub sour cream
Chopped green onions

Preheat oven to 350-degrees.
Spray an 11 x 13 baking pan with a non-stick cooking spray.
In a medium mixing bowl, mix the shredded chicken, about ½ cup of the condensed soup, and one cup of the cheese together. This will make a somewhat stiff mixture, but will hold nicely together.
Divide the mixture evenly in all tortillas and roll them up.
Place them beside one another in the prepared baking pan, seam side down.
Spoon the remaining soup over the tortillas.
Top with the remainder of the cheese.
Cover with foil and bake approximately 30-minutes. Or until heated thoroughly and cheese is melted.
Remove from oven and allow to set for 10-minutes.
Serve with a dollop of sour cream and a spoonful of chopped onions.
